Family update and worms

Posted by joelbyer on December 29, 2007

So…things are fairly low key here in PA today. I’m supposed to teach Sunday School for the youth class at Milmont tomorrow, so I have some preparation there to do. We are basically just chillin’.

We’re staying here at Jen’s folks ’til Tuesday morning, then we will be heading to Cincinatti for a quick couple of days of Christmas with my side of the family as well as getting to see my new nephew Caleb! Speaking of…my sister Dorcas is doing better. Keep praying for her!

And last and least…one of the great things about Jen’s family is worms. I suppose that sounds a mite strange, but a few years ago we used to play fierce, emotinally charged rounds of a computer game called Worms...an incredibly intellectual affair in which each team’s worm, would shoot, blast, bomb, sheep strike, worms on said opponents’ team. This year, the competition went to a whole new level as I brought along my new projector. So now we shoot, blast, bomb, sheep strike each other on a big wall screen.

Yeah, we’re weird.

Merry Christmas!

Posted by joelbyer on December 25, 2007

Just wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! Our family is in Penns Creek, Pennsylvania with Jen’s family. We are eating breakfast at 10AM, then opening gifts. Hey, some of you have already long opened them this morning, but that’s OK.

Amazing/Estatic/Again!

Posted by joelbyer on December 23, 2007

img_5324sm.jpg We just had an amazing Christmas program this morning. I’ve been on Cloud 9 ever since! A few months ago we started a junior church program. The first few Sundays were flat…basically no new kids. Then on the 3rd Sunday we had a real breakthrough with almost 20 or so newer people. Since then, we’ve regularly

Well, this morning we had another big breakthrough. I don’t know the exact number of new people and newer people, but we had at least in the 80’s maybe even approaching 90 people. (I’ll see if I can get a more accurate number later) Someone counted around 15 people who had never been in our church before. The church was pretty full even without the kids and young people from the program!

But here is perhaps the neatest thing about it. I can’t really take much credit! Obviously, all glory belongs to God, but when it come to human efforts, it has been our young people and children who have caught the vision and have done an outstanding job reaching out to kids and their parents and grandparents.

Amber spent many hours working on the costumes, Sam and Maria helped pick up kids and designing the cool stable pictured above, Cherub and Margaret have been directing the Christmas program, Annette did a great job on her offertory, and our kids have been bringing other kids to church.

As for me? I’m cheerin’ em on! (And of course doing whatever I can to fan the flame and work together .)

Another great thing about this whole service is that we had a great turnout in spite of the fact that we had a big snowstorm last week and had to cancel service. God of course, wasn’t taken by surprise!

Things I heard on CBC radio this morning

Posted by joelbyer on December 15, 2007

For you Americans, CBC radio is the basic equivalent of NPR. Publicly funded and hopelessly liberal…all of which leads no doubt to quality reporting, such as…
1) The Leaf’s won in a 4-0 shootout last night. Pretty sure they meant “shut-out”, but I’m probably wrong there.
2) We are going to get 25 kilometres of snow. WOW! I knew we were going to get somewhere around 25 centimetres, but 25 kilometres probably means we’re all going to die.
