News Items of the Day

Posted by joelbyer on November 29, 2005

News Item #1 – Church steeple goes down
Uh, yeah. The heavy wind last night actually blew our church steeple off the roof. (The wood frame underneath had been rotting away). The roof itself seems to be just fine, but obviously, work is needed on our steeple 🙂

News Item #2 – Christmas tree goes up
On to more positive news now. Christmas decorating has begun here at the Byer household. Janessa thinks that we have set up a giant toy for her in the corner of the living room. Hopefully, what happened to our steeple doesn’t happen to our tree. 🙂

It’s Election Time!

Posted by joelbyer on November 28, 2005

(Note: if you’re not interested in Canadian Politics, skip this story and see the pictures below)

Uh,hmm. Excuse me everyone, but just to let you know, this blog was accurate again. We stated a while back that it looked like we were soon to have an election.

I am thrilled. This has been what has kept me up at nights, dancing in the halls in excited anticipation. Also, sometimes I’m a little facitious in my tone.

Reasons why I am not excited (Caveat: keep in mind these are my personal views, not necessarily the views of my church, etc.):

1) The Canadian voter mindset – Canadian voters have rarely missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The more that real change is needed, you can count on…the same old thing!

2) The Media – By and large, the media is solidly with the Liberal Party of Canada, and most every issue is heavily slanted in their favor. Unlike the US, there is little or no counter-balence to present reasons for supporting the other side.

3) Fear – Abortion will be outlawed! Gay-marriage too! Health Care will be privatized! Quebec will leave Canada! All it takes is a few cliches, and the people will go back in droves to the…same old thing. Of course there are those pesky little facts like how waiting times for health care have greatly lengthened over the last 10 or so years, Separatism is on the rise due to the Sponsorship Scandal, and issues like gay marriage were decided by the courts, not the people – but this is all outweighed by the fear of change.

So…I know this sounds a little cynical, and I sure hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid I’ll be right.

Just for the fun of it, here’s my seat projection for this election.

Liberals – 137

Conservatives – 89

NDP – 19

Block Quebecois – 63

This last week our family went to Cincinnati, Ohio for a week’s vacation. We celebrated American Thanksgiving there (the turkey was great!), visited with family, went shopping, went to jail [ministry-related, not because of what I did 🙂 ] and really enjoyed it! Check out all the pictures below.

SOS (Save our Sparrows)

Read this extremely sad story and weep. Poor sparrow. Such a short life…and all because of a greed for dominos.
